School Council Volunteers Making a Difference Every Day

Sunday, April 10, 2016 (St. Johns NL)The President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of School Councils (NLFSC) recognizes the outstanding contributions of hundreds of school volunteers across the province during National Volunteer Week April 10 – 16.

National Volunteer Week is an opportunity for all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to express appreciation to the outstanding volunteers in our school system, says NLFSC President Peter Whittle. Each week hundreds of people give hundreds of hours coaching sport teams, helping with school breakfast and lunch programs, assisting with afternoon programs and serving on school councils.

Our School Council members are dedicated volunteers who give countless hours in their advisory roles to enhance the learning environment at their schools. We applaud the many parents, teachers and community members for the time they spend fundraising and coming up with creative ways to financially support different initiatives such as field trips, arts, music, drama, sorts equipment and technology resources in their respective schools. When funding to the education system and schools is cut, parents and school councils often volunteer to pick up the slack.

School Councils across NL raise over $300,000 every year to help fund school initiatives that are not covered by the provincial government, or the English District School Board adds Mr. Whittle.

The time they give raising this money and coming up with creative fundraising ideas year after year needs to be acknowledged and saluted. The benefits of their fundraising efforts for students are immeasurable and the savings for government is significant!
